Economics professor Karl-Göran Mäler, who passed away last year, founded the Beijer Institute together with fellow economist Sir Partha Dasgupta in 1992 and he remained its director until his retirement in 2006.

Under Karl-Göran’s leadership the Beijer Institute established several regional networks of environmental economists, among them the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE). This memorial lecture is arranged by SANDEE together with the Indian Society for Ecological Economics (INSEE) as part of  it’s 11th biennial conference.

Sir Partha Dasgupta is a Frank Ramsay Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge. He recently presented the landmark review “The Economics of Biodiversity”,  commissioned by the UK Treasury, and the first comprehensive economic framework of its kind for biodiversity.
