Summary and reading materials

In February 2021, the UK HM Treasury released the Independent Review on the Economics of Biodiversity led by Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta, University of Cambridge, Beijer Fellow and first chair of the board of the Beijer Institute. The influential report presents a comprehensive economic framework for biodiversity, the first of its kind. It calls for changes in how we think, act and measure economic success to protect and enhance our prosperity and the natural world, focusing on action needed across three areas:

  • Ensuring humanity’s demands on nature do not exceed supply
  • Changing how economic success is measured beyond GDP
  • Transforming institutions in the financial and educational fields

After professor Dasguptas talk,  a panel discussion moderated by Dr Mia Horn af Rantzien will follow, with speakers from academia, the finance sector, and Swedish policymaking. The conversations will link to recent international discussions on biodiversity, particularly the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at the 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15).
