Maria Schewenius is a junior researcher at the Beijer Institute and a PhD candidate at Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University. Her research focuses on complex adaptive social-ecological-technological systems.
At the Beijer Institute, Maria contributes to the programme Governance, Technology, and Complexity, focusing on AI in digital governance of complex systems at local to global scales.
In her research, Maria analyses contributions, limitations, and risks associated with deploying emerging digital information and communication technologies (digital ICTs), such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR), in urban governance and management. Focus is on supporting ecosystem services provided by nature as part of the social-ecological-technological systems that urban areas constitute.
Maria holds an MSc from Stockholm Resilience Centre and a BSc from the University of Gothenburg. Previous work includes urban projects such as the global assessment Cities and Biodiversity Outlook and the Central Baltic-focused project Augmented Urbans, the VR productions Voices of the favela and Planetary boundaries – the VR experience, and a research visit at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Maria holds an affiliation with the University of Gävle.
